How to Find Almost Anything on your Computer with Windows Search

The built-in desktop search tool is one of my favorite features of Windows. Unlike Google Instant, Windows Desktop Search cannot predict queries in advance but it can find you relevant documents, e-mails, programs and other files almost as fast as you can type characters in the search box.

Windows search can be accessed from a variety of places on your computer. This includes the Windows Start Menu, Windows Explorer or press the “Windows key + F” to open a standalone search window. The latter option is more useful as it offers hints as you type and thus you can easily construct complex search queries without knowing the exact syntax.

Use Windows Desktop Search like a Pro

Windows Search supports simple operators to help you narrow down search results and find the exact file or email message that you’re looking for. Some real-world examples:

1. Find presentations (ppt files) that contain a particular word.

ext:ppt sales {Search for the word “sales” in file names as well the content of documents}

ext:ppt filename:sales {Search only file names, don't look inside the file content}

2. Find documents that were created or modified this week.

ext:doc date:this week {replace doc with xls, ppt, etc. for other file types}

In addition to “this week”, you may use values like today, yesterday, last week, past month or even “a long ago” with the date: search operator. It also works with date ranges as in the following examples.

date:13-‎09-‎2010..‎24-‎09-‎2010 {find files added /modified in this date range}

kind:pictures date:>23-09-2010 {find all photographs that were captured after this day}

3. Find files that are taking lot of space on your system.

The following search query will instantly find gigantic video files that are larger than 128 MB in size. If you replace the value “gigantic” with “empty”, you’ll see all the files are 0 KB in size.

size:gigantic kind:video {find large video files like mp4, mov, wmv, avi, etc.}

size:>500MB {all files that are larger than .5 GB}

size:500MB..800Mb {find files that are in this particular size range}

4. Find files within a specific folder.

Windows Desktop Search, by default, will find files across all folders that have been added to the search index. If your search results are cluttered due to this, you can quickly narrow them down to select folders as in the following examples:

todo folder:documents {search your My Documents folders}

folder:desktop ext:pdf date:today {find PDF documents that you saved today}

adobe setup.ini folder:c:\program files {search a file in Adobe’s installation folders}

5. Find Emails with Windows Search

Other than documents and files, Windows Search is an excellent tool for searching your Outlook emails and it works more or less like search commands in Gmail. Some examples:

from:aryaman date:this week {find emails from Aryaman that you received this week}

isread:false importance:high {find all your important but still unread emails}

hasattachment:true size:>5mb {find emails with bulky attachments}

subject:"credit card" from:bank.com {find all Credit Card related emails from the bank}

These are just a few useful examples but you should also check out MSDN for a complete list of advanced search operators that are supported by Windows Desktop Search.

Also, if you have trouble getting your files or your emails in the search results, chances are that you have not added the locations to your Windows Search Index. Go to Control Panel –> Indexing Options and modify your Indexed Locations.

FUJIFILM FINEPIX Z700EXR

The FinePix Z700EXR makes its presence felt with a slim full metal body and a full-sized touch interface. It comes with an acceptable 5x optical zoom, a standard 35 mm lens, and an effective resolution of 12 megapixels. Its 3.5-inch touch screen is responsive and accurate, and the dual direction GUI rotates to either portrait or landscape view. Apart from 15 scene modes, the Z700EXR features a film simulation mode. There is also a touch and- shoot function that lets you focus on the subject before shooting. Strangely, the manual mode doesn’t allow the aperture or shutter speed to be changed.
You do, however, get to change basic settings like ISO, white balance and exposure. The Z700EXR also comes with an image search feature, allowing you to search by date, face, scene, or data type. The camera can record video at 1280x720 (720p). However, the overall performance suff ers. There are panning issues, colors appear dull, and the camera has no control over the contrast. For still images, however, the Z700EXR does well
in maintaining color and saturation. Color is neither too vivid, nor too dull, but there is some color bleeding evident. There is a certain amount of loss in sharpness when it comes to capturing finer details, but overall sharpness is well maintained. Night shots are good too, but nothing to write home about. The Z700EXR’s macro range is a real disappointment, with a minimum shooting distance of 5.5 cm.
The camera takes decent still images, but fails in terms of video recording. With a price tag of Rs 13,999, it’s not a camera we would recommend, as the Sony DSC-W360 and DSC-W380 perform at almost the same price.

LEMON iQ 707

With a shiny chrome ring running all around, the Lemon iQ 707 is certainly a looker. It sports a QWERTY keypad, which seems sturdy and responsive. The 2.2-inch TFT display is a bit tiny, but bright. The dual-SIM feature sports slots on top of each other, making it quite inconvenient to insert a SIM card. Internal memory is a measly 20 MB, though there is support for memory cards of up to 8 GB. The audio out is through the mini-USB port, but a USBto- 3.5 mm adapter is included. The iQ 707 comes with a nice, quick interface, but it can be a bit frustrating at times.
The music and video players are basic, but we were unable to play any AVI fi les.There’s no Wi-Fi and 3G; just Bluetooth and EDGE. The device comes bundled with Opera Mini, and Nimbuzz IM, and there are shortcuts to Facebook, Twitter, etc. There's an email app that supports POP3 and IMAP4, but we couldn't get it to work with Gmail. The 3.2 megapixel camera works well only in well-lit environments. The 1100 mAh battery comes pretty close to the manufacturer's claim of 4.5 hours talk time. If you're on a tight budget and want to try a good looking QWERTY phone, then the Lemon iQ 707 may be a good starting point.At the price of 4,999 INR,It is not bad.

This tweak makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'.What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu.

• Go to Start then Run (Or Just type "Regedit" in Windows 7
• Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
• Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\"  

• Select "MenuShowDelay"
• Right click and select "Modify'
• Reduce the number to around "100"

This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at It.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10Mini

There’s never a dull moment with the Xperia X10 Mini. It’s small, easy to operate, and comfortable to hold. The lightweight handset features a 2.5- inch capacitive touchscreen. The Android OS (v1.6) runs on the Mini’s Qualcom MSM7227 600MHz processer, making the UI extremely zippy. Sony Ericsson’s TimeScape UI works well and is easy to navigate using just your thumb. The music player is simple and capable of providing loud and clear tones.
The FM radio didn’t work out too well, as sound reception wasn’t very good. The Mini supports 3GP and MPEG4 video, but the screen size and resolution don’t make it easy to watch for too long. The Mini is 3G-enabled and it also supports EDGE and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP is also available, and it packs in GPS with apps like Google Maps, GeoTags and WisePilot. Although the small screen becomes an issue, the handset handles the GPS software really well. The Android browser is great, and its zoom feature is a real blessing. Push email is also available and it’s really easy to set up your email accounts. The phone packs a very capable 5 megapixel camera into its tiny body, but we were unable to access any of the settings except for the scene mode and fl ash. Photos came out really well, with colors and clarity that do justice to the price. The 950 mAh battery allowed over a day and a half of usage with email, geotagging, and IM turned on. Talk time averaged at around 3 hours 15 minutes, which is quite impressive.
 However, the battery cannot be removed, so if the handset hangs, there’s no quick fi x. The X10 Mini’s Rs 16,475 price tag may seem a little steep, but for all it has to off er, it really isn't. If you’re looking for a handset that does everything, is easy to use, and is as cute as button, you can’t go wrong with the X10 Mini.

ZEN S10 DUAL SIM

The S10 is a rather masculine looking handset encased in its all metal, chromed body. It isn’t exactly lightweight, but holding it gives you a reassuring feel. The S10 employs a Nokia Sirocco series-like slider with an enclosed keypad. The keypad looks small and compact, but you’ll quickly get used to it. A power button is located at the top and a universal mini USB port for the headset and charger is located at the bottom. The S10 also packs in a 2 megapixel camera with an LED flash.
Unfortunately, the S10 doesn’t have hot swap for the microSD card, but on the plus side, Zen has included a 2 GB card. The 2.2-inch display is quite clear for viewing in all conditions. When it comes to the UI, Nokia users should find the transition comfortable. The quick access shortcut bar on the desktop is reminiscent of a Nokia Series 40 handset. Basic GPRS/WAP is all the S10 has to off er in terms of network connectivity.
This means no email, but you will be able to send and receive MMS. The only social networking option available is an MSN Windows Live chat app. Other connectivity features include Bluetooth and USB. It also doubles up as a webcam when connected to a PC. The battery life is one of the phone’s biggest drawbacks. Its 800mAh battery is capable of less than a day’s usage and it had to be charged quite frequently.At a price of 4,999, It is a good buy.

Firefox 4 tentatively scheduled for a February release

After its fair share of delays, Firefox 4 looks set for a late-February release. Posting on the Mozilla Planning mailing list, the Director of Platform Engineering, Damon Sicore, thanked Firefox 4's "tired and stressed" developers, and urged them to hang on, to produce one last burst of awesomeness and "ship the best possible product."

There are now 160 hard blockers (serious bugs) left in Firefox 4, all of which need to be squashed before a release candidate can be released. Previous releases of Firefox have squashed about 100 hard blockers in six weeks, so February release is definitely going to be tight -- but here's hoping!

If you want to do your bit, and you're not a programmer, the best thing you can do is grab the latest version of Firefox 4 and take part in the test pilot studies. The latest beta of Firefox 4 really is quite good -- and if, by chance, you stumble across a bug, report it.

Scan Internet Security 2011 features a refreshed UI that makes navigation a lot easier. System protection is divided into six categories - fi le protection, mail protection, anti-spam module, web protection, endpoint security and privacy control. However, compared to other well known security suites, there’s is still work to be done in terms of usability and visual appeal. These allow you to deny execution of executables from network and USB drives. You can also prevent users from modifying or deleting files and folders. The Web protection filter lets you block explicit words and adult content, and set time restrictions. However, the time restriction feature isn’t well implemented as timings need to be manually fed in. Configuring the firewall is simple, but at times, legitimate programs such as ‘googleupdate.exe’ were blocked. This needed to be manually resolved. The endpoint security is what sets eScan apart. Here, you can restrict access to USB ports via password protection, read-only mode, and creating a device white-list. eScan Internet Security 2011 is an improvement, but still not good enough to challenge the best in the category.It costs about 1,500INR and it's good for this price.

Dell Streak

The Dell Streak is a lot smaller than your average tablet and a lot bigger than a large
touchscreen mobile phone. So the questionis, just where does it fit in?
Dressed in all black, we have to admit that it’s quite a looker. It’s just 10 mm thick, which actually makes it a lot slimmer than quite a few smartphones. Weighing just 220 g, it’s comfortable to hold as well. It’s got 2.2 GB of internal memory and it also supports microSD cards of up to 32 GB.
Although there’s a hot swap under the rear panel for the memory card, for some strange reason, the
handset tends to auto switch-off if the panel is opened. The 3.5 mm hands-free port is located on
one side, or rather the top of the device, since it’s typically supposed to be used in landscape mode
like the Nokia N900. The volume/zoom keys, screen lock and the camera’s shutter release are also
located on this side.

Dell’s first mistake is incorporating a proprietary USB/charging port (bottom) into the Streak.Since it’s pretty much a large mobile handset, it would have been a whole lot simpler on us if thewent with a standard micro USB socket. Dell hasgone with touch-sensitive buttons on one side of the display. A microphone is also located on the same side. A light sensor and front-facing VGA camera are located on the other side just near the phone’s speaker. Using this rather large device to answer calls takes a lot of getting used to, so we’d recommend using the hands-free instead. The large5-inch touchscreen display sports a 480x800 pixel resolution, which makes it clear and easy to view even in the bright outdoors.
Dell’s second mistake is launching a device like this with an outdated version of the operating system. The Streak comes with Android 1.6 and we were told that it’s upgradeable to 2.1 (although we were unable to do so). Donut just doesn’t cut it anymore, and while Éclair has its fl aws, it left 1.6 in its dust long ago. If you’re removing shortcuts/ widgets from the desktop, there’s no click-and drag- to-Trash option; you’ll have to select the icon and then select the menu button to remove the item. It allows you to create multiple desktops, and wallpapers can be set individually to each. The drop-down menus make it easy to access various options, notifi cations and settings.
We had a couple of issues with the UI. Firstly, multi-touch wasn’t a universal function. On any Android 2.1+ handset, Angry Birds would allow you to pinch zoom out so you can see just where you’re fi ring. Thankfully, the browser and image gallery allow for multi-touch zooming without a hitch. It still isn’t as smooth as the iPhone’s, but it’ll do. We expected a bit more in terms of speed from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 GHz processor.

It’s not a slow handset, but activating apps and opening menus wasn’t as smooth as we’d hoped. The keypad could also have been a little better designed. With the num pad on the side, it means your right thumb is going to have to do a bit of stretching. In portrait mode, the Zero and ‘O’ are too close together since the num pad moves above the QWERTY keypad. It’ll take some getting used to.
There was quite a bit of confusion while syncing Facebook and Google accounts with the device’s phonebook.

Micromax Q7

The Micromax Q7 is fairly boxy, with no curves or subtle protrusions, making it neat, simplistic, and easy to manage. The keypad, while comfortable, is difficult to view when lit and in direct light. The 2.2-inch display is brighter and much clearer than the one in the Q5. A hot swap microSD card slot is present, along with a 3.5 mm hands-free socket, and a micro USB port. The phone supports Bluetooth with A2DP and USB 2.0. The Java-based OS runs very smoothly and there’s no lag whatsoever. The bundled hands-free kit is comfortable and very capable of handling the handset’s superb audio quality. Tones are crisp, with good bass thanks to the EQ settings and other sound options. FM radio pick-up was also not an issue. In terms of video playback, the Q7 handles 3GP, MPEG4, AVI and FLV files very well. It’s amazing that it offers Wi-Fi at this low price, making surfi ng and downloading email (POP/IMAP) painless.Of course, EDGE, GPRS, and WAP are also available. There’s even a dedicated Java app for Facebook. The 2-megapixel camera is nothing out of the ordinary, but overall image clarity is not too bad.
The Q7 off ered about 4 hours of talk time on a single charge. Considering the features, especially Wi-Fi, the Rs 4,800 price tag makes the Q7 a great buy.

Nokia N900

Nokia’s N900 is more of a mobile computing device or mobile Internet device than a phone. It’s bulky, but like the N96 or N95, it’s still easy to carry around. The 3.5-inch display is bright and clear with a surprisingly
responsive resistive touchscreen. 
The slide-out QWERTY keypad takes a while to get used; it’s small, but the placement of the keys is good. In addition to the 32 GB of built-in memory, the N900 also supports MicroSD cards of up to 16 GB.
In keeping with today’s multiple-desktop trends, the N900 off ers widget, shortcut and bookmark support, enabling quick and easy access to your favorite features,although a few applications took quite
a long time to load. For existing Nokia users, switching over to the new OS will be a cinch as they’ve tried to retain as much of the Symbian UI as possible. Also,you can use any and every part of the UI without the use of the pesky stylus.
The music player, although capable of clear tones, dishes them out at a very low decibel level. The N900 doesn’t have preloaded FM radio, but it has a built-in antenna, so you can download an FM radio app. The video player supports almost all codecs, including DivX and XviD. Connectivity options include 3G, GPRS/EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and USB 2.0. While the native browser is fantastic, a few of its functions didn’t work. Push mail is also fully supported.
The handset’s GPS module took quite a while to locate a signal for Ovi Maps, and the Geotagging function didn’t work too well either. Image quality from the standard 5 megapixel autofocus camera was decent, but colors seemed a bit dull. The N900 has the poorest battery amongst Nokia’s handsets. On a full charge, you get just a little over 12 hours of usage, while Android devices and other N-Series handsets manage much more. 
As much potential as the N900 may have, it’s still a work in progress for the Indian market. One might as well go with the N97 or Mini instead, which off era almost as much as the N900 does.

Nokia and Microsoft now partners!

Nokia has announced a partnership with Microsoft, adopting Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform. In the process, Symbian will become a “franchise platform”, while MeeGo will be an open-source, mobile operating system project; Nokia still expects to ship a MeeGo device later in 2011, but the platform will be considered as for “longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences.”

In terms of the Microsoft deal, Nokia will adopt Bing maps and the Ovi Store and other content download portals will be integrated with Windows Marketplace. From April 1, there will be two new divisions, Smart Devices – incorporating Symbian smartphones, MeeGo computers, strategic business operations and responsible for “creating a winning Windows Phone portfolio” – led by Jo Harlow, and Mobile Phones – pushing Nokia’s “web for the next billion” strategy – led by Mary McDowell.

NAVTEQ, which currently powers Ovi Maps, will continue to operate as a separate reporting entity.

Razer Naga

The Razer naga is build specifically keeping MMORPG gamers in mind.It looks a lot like Razer's Mamba mouse,and it features the same blue glow as the Abyssus.The two main buttons are quite wide and offer great grip.Users with various grip styles will adjust to the Naga in no time,but a small worry is that the MMO buttons on the left side are a bit weak,requiring very little pressure to activate.

While some buttons are little Hard to reach,once you get used them,you will be using macros effortlessly.A DPI switcher is sorley missed,espically since other gaming mice offer it.Another big oversight is that the MMO buttons cannot be deactivated,so you can accidentally press them when you aren't gaming.The device software lets you turn the logo loght on and off and alter the DPI between 100 and 5600DPI.You can also download add-ons for certain MMO games to configure the keypad buttons in-game.As of now,there are add-ons for only World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online.

We tested the Naga with WoW,and it performed quite well.You can move and hit using just the right hand,leaving the left free for chips and soda!

It's a great mouse for those who play MMO's but if you play all kind of games,this one isn't for you.The lack of a DPI switcher and the inability to shut off the keypad is a bit downer.

At Rs 4,999,it's also a bit of a stretch in the price department.
