Chrome OS-powered notebooks won’t arrive this year

It has been a long time. I personally was expecting Google to start the buzz around Chrome OS back in summer launch a pilot program as they do now, release an RC, etc. Anyway, the Chrome OS pilot program is now reality and everyone can join in until December 22. Some big names out there already have: Virgin America, American Airlines, US Department of Defence. We also expect notebooks running Chrome OS pretty soon.

Idea of cloud computing which is behind the whole Chrome OS project does require a constant Internet connection – otherwise a Chrome OS machine (notebook in the case) becomes useless. To address this, Google has already collaborated with Verizon to provide wireless broadband Internet access. This is in the US, of course. For the rest of the world this matter remains less clear, but we still have time until notebooks with Chrome OS onboard will become available in the market. Reportedly, this will happen in early (hopefully) 2011 with first manufacturers being Acer and Samsung. Other details including specs and prices are yet to be disclosed.
