Facebook granted trademark on the word “Face”

Facebook never ceases to make headlines, but this time it’s not rolling out any new features or security updates. According to TechCrunch, Facebook has been granted the rights to trademark the word “Face.”

Within three months, the social networking giant will need to fork over a fee to the patent office, fill out a Statement of Use, and use the trademark in its own form of commerce, in order to secure its rights. This means they’re going to have to come up with some sort of telecommunication based Face-something in order to seal the deal. However, even so, this isn’t one of those patents that covers all usage of the word–that would be completely absurd. The trademark will simply cover the use of the word “Face” with regards to:

“Telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars.”

It’s interesting to note that if Facebook get this trademark, Apple could possibly face legal issues with its video chat program, FaceTime. Facebook filed for the “Face” trademark back in August, but Apple definitely had FaceTime out the door before that. It’s unclear if that would make a difference once the trademark is secured. That’s going to require someone who actually knows something about patent/trademark law. Either way, Facebook got what they wanted

Goo.gl Is the Fastest URL Shortener on the Block

A few weeks ago, Google opened up its Goo.gl URL shortener to all. It has some neat tricks like real-time stats tracking, and QR code creation, but it turns out to have another feature. It’s super fast. Some testing done by Pingdom shows that in most situations, Google’s URL shortener is faster at directing users to pages than the competition.

Page load times in North America and Europe were tested, and Goo.gl was the winner by a country mile. Is.gd actually had slightly better performance in Europe, but it’s slow North American load times hurt it in the combined calculation. The popular Bit.ly URL shortener was found to be three times slower than Goo.gl.

We are talking about a few hundred milliseconds here. So the difference in real life might be negligible. It’s more about bragging rights than anything else. Would you be swayed by these sorts of tests to use a different service?

Kinect sales reach 2.5 million

Microsoft announced that they have managed to sell 2.5 Million Kinect units in just 25 days. The figure, revealed by IGN, which includes all worldwide sales, eclipsed those of Microsoft’s rival Sony, who sold 2.5 million PlayStation Move controllers within a couple of months of their launch.

Microsoft had originally predicted sales of around three million Kinect units by Christmas, but with the figure released today, the company is expected to go well past that by the end of the year. Though earlier this month Microsoft’s Don Mattrick stated that the company hoped to sell five million units worldwide, a figure that they may now be pushed to reach.

In other news, many analysts have predicted that both Sony and Microsoft commenting that their hardware stock was showing shortages around the world, may have been a hoax. According to PlayStationLifeStyle.net analyst Michael Pachter said that he believes the companies are just trying to build up hype without justification. PlayStation Move and Kinect devices have been available around the UK since they launched, with no sign of any shortages

Nvidia GTX 570 detailed.

SweClockers managed to get their hands on Palit’s product information sheet for the upcoming GTX 570. I already wrote about the number of shaders before and the only thing that I am missing now is the price.

The GTX 570 is based on Nvidia’s 40nm GF110 chip, has 480 CUDA Cores and works at 732MHz for the GPU, 1464MHz for Shaders and 3800MHz for 1280MB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 320-bit memory interface. The card has a dual slot cooler and will have a 225W TDP, at least according to the spec sheet.

The launch date is set for December 7th, only a few days before AMD’s official launch of Cayman, at least if all goes according to plan. All we need now is the price tag and few benchmarks.

Did Google Just Buy Groupon for $2.5 Billion?

A deal between search giant Google, and feisty coupon start-up Groupon has been rumored for weeks now. But the rumors have now seemingly coalesced around a finalized Google acquisition of Groupon for a whopping $2.5 billion, according to VatorNews. The price seems to be in line with the approximate value of the company. Goupon has been preparing to raise funds that would have valued it at nearly $3 billion. Being acquired by Google would be an easy and automatic payday.

Groupon has gained notoriety as a social coupon service. Users pick the “Groupons” from the site that they would like to use. These are often deals provided directly by local businesses. The discounts are usually steep, but are only available for a limited time. Groupon encourages users to share Groupons they like with friends. This jives with Google’s movement towards social everywhere, as opposed to a single social hub like Facebook.

Both Yahoo and eBay have also been courting Groupon, so Google may have been willing to pay a premium in the acquisition. Neither company has discussed the reports, but we’ll probably know more soon.

Viewsonic joins the tablet bandwagon!!!

Do you like your tablet screens at 7 inches or 10.1? How about your tablet OS—Windows or Android? And what about the CPU—Intel Atom or a trusty, ARM-based system-on-chip? Within the next few months, ViewSonic will be offering two new tablets bearing various combinations of hardware specs that check all of the boxes above.

Let’s start with the smaller ViewPad 7, which should be shipping late Q4 this year at a street price of $479. The ViewPad 7 will have a 7-inch, 800×480 touch screen, and run Android 2.2 on top of a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. There’s 512MB of onboard memory, and a microSD slot grants up to 32GB of additional storage space. A rear-facing camera will clock in at 3MP, and a front-facing chat cam will be a wee 0.3MP.

For connectivity, The ViewPad 7 will boast WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G. ViewSonic’s Adam Hanin, Vice President of Marketing, told us this tablet is “carrier independent,” explaining that 3G data connectivity is “ready to go, but not linked to a specific carrier. It’s something that will come after launch in all likelihood.”

While the 7-incher is positioned as more of a “mobile lifestyle” gadget, the ViewPad 10—which should arrive in early Q1 2011 at a street price of $629—is much more of a business/productivity device. First off, it’s got a 10.1-inch, 1024×600, LED-backlit touch screen. Second, it includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of integrated memory, a 16GB SSD for storage, and a microSD slot for further expansion. There’s no rear-camera (do you really want to shoot vacation pics with a 10-inch tablet?), but it does have a 1.3MP front-facing webcam.

When you see Intel in a tablet device, you know Windows can’t be far behind, and indeed, the ViewPad 10 comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, meaning it boasts full support for Windows applications, including Adobe Flash and Office. But, alas, this device will also dual-boot into Android! Granted, it will be Android 1.6—ViewSonic decided to go retro to leverage 1.6’s smaller footprint. Nonetheless, you’ll be able to use whatever Android games and apps that are supported by the aging OS version.

3G, you ask? Nada. The ViewPad 10 will be WiFi-only. You should be using it in board rooms, hotel suites, and home offices. If you take it to the park or beach, kiss telecom data services goodbye.

Intel’s Sandy Bridge dated and priced

Although I have been writing about Intel’s Sandy Bridge lineup for quite some time, the guys from Expreview managed to score a full list of upcoming Sandy Bridge CPUs including the release date and the launch price.

The specifications are pretty much what we have been writing for a while and there are no surprises. The interesting details is that Intel only plans to launch its quad-cores on 9th of January while the rest of the lineup should follow up in late February and in Q2 2011 for some Pentium branded models.

The quad-core linup includes three Core i7 models, and seven Core i5 models, including the Core i7-2600K, 2600, 2600S and four different Core i5-2500 models and Core i5 2400S, 2400, and Core i5-2300. The top-notch Core i7-2600K will be priced at US $317 while the top Core i5-2500K will have a US $216 price tag.

The Core i3 models are scheduled for 20th of February and it looks like Intel plans to launch four models, rangin from 2.5GHz tto 3.3GHz. All of the Core i3 Models will be dual-core, four-thread models with 3MB of cache. The top offer is the Core i3-2390T working at 2.7GHz with 3.5GHz Turbo and a 35W TDP, as well as the Core i3-2120 working at 3.3GHz but with a slightly higher 65W TDP.

The some sort of novelty are the Pentium branded dual core models and according to the Expreview list, the first one is the Pentium G620T, clocked at 2.2GHz with 3MB of cache and a 35W TDP. This one will come out on 27th of Feb...

MSI rolls out GTX460 HAWK!!

Following the release of its month old MSI N460GTX Hawk, MSI has prepared yet another Hawk, the N460GTX Hawk Talon Attack. Featuring higher factory overclock, better 0.4ns GDDR5 memory, MSI’s Twin Frozr II cooler, the new GTX 460 Hawk should be considered the cream of the crop, at least when you talk about GTX 460 GPU.

The new N460GTX Hawk Talon Attack works at 810MHz for the GPU, 1620 for those 336 Cuda cores and features 1GB of GDDR5 memory overclocked at 3600MHz. Nvidia launches yet another budget Fermi-based GPU – GeForce GT 440

Nvidia has announced yet another Fermi-based GPU which targets an even lower price segment than the GTS 450, called the GT 440. Based on the same GF106 core as the GTS 450, the GT 440 is aimed at casual/budget gamers. For now, the product is available only to OEMs for desktops, but is expected to be priced at less than $100 while delivering Nvidia PhysX, CUDA, and 3D Vision technologies.

AMD intros more hotfixes

Just days after it released Catalyst 10.10, AMD has released not one, but two hotfixes for the driver pack.

The new drivers were ready in time for the HD 6800 launch and they were used in AMD internal testing weeks ago, if leaked slides are to be believed. However, the outfit has already introduced the 10.10a hotfix which we wrote about yesterday and the new one, dubbed 10.10c appeared today.

The latest hotfix delivers OpenGL 4.1 support as well as a few Crossfire performance improvements. Some performance optimizations for HD 6800 series boards in AvP, Starcraft 2 and Open GL are also included

HD6870 and GTX470 VFM war!!

As rumored, Nvidia slashed the price of its GeForce GTX 470 videocard today, and did so by more than 25 percent, at least in terms of MSRP. The GTX 470, which was originally marked at $350, can now be found for as little as $260.

That’s about $20 more expensive than the lowest priced AMD Radeon HD 6870 videocards (you can read our review of the XFX HD 6870, and the HD 6850 ), all without any mail-in-rebate shenanigans.

So out of the two, which should you get? You could flip a piece-of-eight and be happy with the result no matter how it lands. The GTX 470 is slightly faster than the HD 6870, while the latter costs a little less. If a warranty is what matters most, out of the $260 and under cards, only the EVGA GTX 470 comes with a lifetime backing (provided you register the card within 30 days). XFX also offers a lifetime backing on its cards, which one-ups EVGA’s by being transferable to a second owner, but the XFX HD 6870 runs for $280.

MSI GTX480 lightning!!!

Although it was detailed at last MSI MOA (Master Overclocking Arena) finals, MSI has now officially launched its latest Lightning series card, the N480GTX Lightning. Based on Nvidia’s GF100 GPU, this beast brings an improved PCB design, Twin Frozr III cooler and is aimed purely at overclocking enthusiasts, especially those that are not afraid to meddle with LN2.

The card works 750MHz for the GPU and comes with 1536MB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4000MHz. It features 480 CUDA Cores clocked at 1401MHz. The Twin Frozr III cooler has two 90mm fans, two 8mm heatpipes and should be quite enough to keep this beast well cooled.

The card can brag with 16-phase VRM design, Military Class components, Dual BIOS, Proadlizer capacitors and DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort gold-plated outputs. Bear in mind that in order to run this beast, you’ll need two 8-pin and one 6-pin PCI-Express power connector.

Back during MOA, the card was capable of scoring P39281, which is actually a 3DMark Vantage record, of course, under LN2 cooling.

Crytek: “PC Is Easily A Generation Ahead of Consoles Right Now”

Is your Xbox creaky, prone to long-winded “back in my day” rants, and in the midst of a particularly expensive mid-life crisis? Well, you’re not alone. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has also noticed that his consoles are just about ready for retirement. Problem is, they don’t plan on passing the torch without a fight.

“As long as the current console generation exists and as long as we keep pushing the PC as well, the more difficult it will be to really get the benefit of both,” he told Edge (via CVG).

“PC is easily a generation ahead right now. With 360 and PS3, we believe the quality of the games beyond Crysis 2 and other CryEngine developments will be pretty much limited to what their creative expressions is, what the content is. You won’t be able to squeeze more juice from these rocks.”

He also went on to explain that things won’t change until publishers stop treating the PC like a barren, profitless wasteland.

“I generally think it’s still developers’ mentality [that is to blame],” he said. “A lot nowadays don’t consider PC a big issue any more; their [sales] expectations are nowhere near what they are for the console versions.”

So yeah, it’s kind of a hollow victory for us. We have the nicest, fastest hotrods on the lot, but nowhere to race. Kind of puts a damper on building bigger, better PCs too, doesn’t it? Looks like we need a new hobby to distract us for the time being. How about this: first person to get Crysis running on a Minecraft PC wins. And… go!

Symbian Foundation Pulls the Plug on Source Code Servers

Nokia likes to remind us that Symbian is the most popular Smartphone OS on the planet, but let’s face it, they aren’t fooling anyone. The open source operating system has been growing increasingly irrelevant in a post iPhone / Android world, and today the very foundation that was designed to protect the Symbian ecosystem is dealing what many would consider a death blow.

Starting on December 17th the Symbian Foundation will be shutting down all their websites which include access to the source code, bug fixes, and documentation for the OS. This effectively puts control of Symbian’s fate back in the hands of Nokia, which if history repeats itself probably isn’t a good thing considering every other major manufacturer has abandoned it.

Symbian will remain an open platform which means technically anyone could host the code and documentation if they wanted to, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you. We’ll let you know if we find anymore nails to drive into the coffin in the coming months.

AMOLED Shortage Could Turn Into a Surplus in 2011

Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays power some of the most popular handsets and devices on the market today, but a supply chain shortage has had a dramatic impact on OEM’s both large and small. It’s a problem that has taken most of the year to solve, but it appears as though Samsung might finally be prepared to make amends in 2011 with more production facilities finally coming online, along with new competitors from Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore.

This additional capacity is likely going to lead to better prices and vastly improved availability going into 2011, a trend that anyone on the market for a new device should be thankful for. China is also rumored to be working on an OLED supply chain as well, which if true should finally put all of the supply issues to bed once and for all.

iPad 2 coming in January, Light Peak MBP in April?

Rumors about the iPad 2 have been flying across the Internet as of late and it doesn’t look like they are stopping anytime soon. While the next iPad is rumored to have a new screen, new touch technology, and a lighter design, one source is pegging the release for January of 2011.

EdibleApple.com is claiming that Apple will hold two press events inr Q1 of 2011. At the first event in January, Apple will unveil a new iPad with a “front and rear facing camera” and increased specs. A relatively safe bet for an iPad 2 prediction, but the January announcement is a new development.

Also claimed is that Apple will be unveiling a new MacBook Pro in April with many new features. “The new MacBook Pros will move to solid state storage, up to 512GB, remove the optical drive, and we believe light-peak is being pushed to make it’s first-ever entrance into the market, another Apple exclusive”.

If true, this will help to separate the MacBook Pro from its younger brother the MacBook. Apple has typically been on the leading edge of killing outdated formats as they were among the first to remove the floppy drive from their PCs. Apple has already started this trend by showing that the MacBook Air is a fully capable machine that does not need an optical drive.

Finally a major revision to Final Cut Pro is expected to be unveiled in Q1. A user reportedly emailed Jobs asking about an update to the platform which Jobs replied, “stay tuned and buckle up.” As with any rumor, take it with a grain of salt.

A couple of days ago I was surfing in the Internet looking for some real Vista hacks to apply to my ORIGINAL Windows Vista, just for fun and improve my wonderful operating system a little bit. To my surprise I found out that there are a lot of fake hacks in the web and a lot, really a lot of junk. I mean: clicking on Computer, right click on C: , click on property and tick off “Compress this drive to save disk space” should be well known to everybody and should not be marked as “Hack”, right? On a lot of website instead this little, silly feature is sold as a big hack most of people don’t know about! I mean, are all users real noobs or what? That’s why, apart from inviting you to read this guide of mine, I want to report some real hack people should know. Be sure, they are hacks and not regular features dressed in something else to make them look more appealing! By the way, I used the word hack. But I really don’t like it. Nothing here has to do with hackers or with irregular procedures. They are simple tweaks not to activate or get something for free (and illegally possibly), but just to improve and make your Windows Vista a little sexier.

Apple iPhone4

After tons of leak story talking about the lost iPhone 4G prototype, the iPhone 4G is finally announced yesterday night (1am Singapore Time) at the WWDC 2010. During the keynote, many new features of iPhone OS4 and the new additions to the iPhone has been introduced.

The new iPhone has a design which is very different from other iPhones. It is shaped like a rectangle with a straight back.  The first thign that will capture your eyes would be the stunning high resolution display it has. 326 pixels per inch, 4 times the pixels than the previous iPhones. It uses a very highly precise lamination of the glass screen. It prevents light from reflecting.

Facetime. The long awaited feature on the iPhone. It allows you to video call using WiFi to see your loves ones Live, you can switch between two cameras easily. They updated the camera from 3.5 Megapixels to 5 Megapixels and allow HD video shooting up to 720p at 30 frames per second.  They also include a LED flash for low light shooting.

iPhone 4G have great multitasking ability, with its built in A4 processor also used in the iPad. Now it also has iMovie on it, for you to edit your high definition videos. Improved battery life for the iPhone means more talktime and entertainment.

The iPhone 4 will come in two colors, black and white. Price is $199 USD for the 16GB model, and $299 USD for the 32GB model. Pre-orders of iPhone will start a week from now.  They would be reaching Singapore in July.

MSI Intros GT663 Laptop GTX460 1.5GB!

MSI has really been expanding its gaming portfolio in recent years, and its gaming laptops have been gaining traction across the world. Dell to roll Streak in India!

Dell Streak is the first of the world’s major tablets to have arrived in India, and it will be priced at Rs, 35,000. Launched in partnership with Tata DoCoMo, the Dell Streak will come with a 500MB free data usage plan for the first six months, with the DoCoMo post-paid connection.

The 5-inch Dell Streak will become one of the biggest phones in the country, and, if you want to make frequent calls with it, we recommend you invest in a Bluetooth handsfree along with it. Though the phone-tablet currently runs a heavily customized Android 1.6operating system, it is expected to offer an upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo later this year. The Dell Streak also has a front-facing VGA camera, which will allow for video calling after the upgrade. To protect your large 5-inch screen from scratches and cracks, Dell has used Gorilla Glass in the 5-inch (800×480) display.

Of course, all eyes are now on the Samsung Galaxy tab and Apple iPad, with the latter still not available officially in the country though it has been in international markets for the greater part of this year. They are also expected to launch at similar price points, but, are larger tablets – Galaxy Tab is a 7-inch tablet, while the iPad is a 10-inch tablet. Of course, we are also interested to see how the tablet will fare with the 7-inch OlivePad from Olive telecom, which also boasts of phone connectivity and, Android 2.1 out of the box.
