WIPRO EGO

I own a fairly powerful desktop PC, but I found myself using it for just word processing, Internet browsing, chat and entertainment. So I decided to try out a netbook, which offers better mobility and power saving. I opted for the Wipro EGO, which featured standard netbook specifi cations - Intel Atom 1.6 GHz, 160 GB hard drive, and 2 GB RAM. It has an extremely good build quality, enough (three) USB ports, WLAN (802.11 b/g) and a decent 10.1-inch display, which seemed suitable for my requirements. It came pre-installed with Windows XP Home Edition. I switched to Windows 7 Ultimate and found that it was performing even better. However, the glossy shell and display made it a fingerprint nightmare.

A month into the switch, I noticed a dead pixel, but ignored it because the miniscule problem was not worth opting for a warranty replacement. I was comfortable using it for Web use and word processing, until I noticed that my productivity was declining. The keyboard had tiny keys, and typing on it felt sluggish. I found the touchpad randomly moving haywire. I had no option but to add an external keyboard and mouse to get little more relaxed. Then the smaller screen size and lack of an optical drive started to bother me. I came to the conclusion that netbooks just aren’t for me. When powerful processing such as video encoding and multi-tasking programs were needed, I was handicapped. I hung on for some more time and kept using. Then the battery went dead; just 13 months after buying it (a month after the warranty expired). Instead of spending a few thousands on a new battery, I chose to run it via the charger itself. But a few weeks down the line, I found the WLAN interface also giving up, especially failing after prolonged use. The last straw was the company logo sticker on the lid starting to disappear. It now reads “W RO GO”.

Though the Wipro EGO has a good build quality, is not all that ergonomic. If you’re thinking of buying a netbook, I would recommend that you consider these aspects closely. Spend a little extra and ensure that the one you buy is perfect for your needs. As for me, I switched back to my bulky, power-hogging desktop PC.

Get a constant overview of several time zones

When making a call to another country , you don’t want to inadvertently wake someone up in the middle of the night. But this can actually happen if you do not pay attention to the time difference.

Windows provides help in displaying several time zones. Click the clock to the right of the taskbar. A window with an analog clock and a calendar is displayed. Use the ‘Change Date and Time Settings’ or 'Adjust Time/Date'  link in this window. The ‘Date and Time’ dialog box opens. Activate the ‘Additional Clocks’ tab in it.

This tab can be opened via the control panel as well as via the ‘Time, Language and Region’ and ‘Add times for different time zones’. Alternatively, in the classic view of the Control Panel, double click ‘Date and Time’ and activate the ‘Additional Times’ tab. You can define up to two more time zones that Windows then displays near the analog clock with the local time. For this, there are two ‘Display this time’ fields in the ‘Additional Times' tab. Checkmark the heading to activate the field. You can then select ‘Select time zone’ and ‘Enter display name’ with the help of which you can later identify the time zone. The country name would be an ideal entry. Repeat these settings for the third time if required and confirm with ‘OK’. Now after clicking the taskbar clock, Windows will show both additional time zones. If you simply hover the cursor over the time, a small tooltip with the current date and the various times is displayed.

DELL VENUE

The Dell Venue is an impressive looking piece of hardware; very refined and aesthetically sound, but at 164 g, slightly on the heavy side. The 4.1-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display sports a 480x800 pixel resolution, making for some blissful Web browsing, video playback and gaming. Since it’s encased in Gorilla Glass, there’s no need to apply a screen guard. Under the hood of this Froyo-running beast is a 1 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, and 1 GB ROM.

As user-friendly as Dell’s Stage UI is, it just didn’t seem to be as fl uid as Launcher Pro (free off the App Market). There was noticeable lag and jittery motions while scrolling through the menus and multiple desktops with Dell Stage widgets. While overall speed of operation for most functions was good, the accelerometer was just a tad off , and response time while switching orientation was not as fluid as one would want. Irrespective of what handsfree/ earphones we used, the audio quality was just not up to mark. Dell has not provided any audio or video enhancement options with the Venue, but thanks to the Android Market, options are available. In RockPlayer, 720p videos played back spectacularly well and looked fantastic; we only wish we could hear the dialogue.

The Kindle app for Android is preloaded, as are Amazon’s MP3 downloading app and Del Video Stage.
There’s also an online radio app called Tunein and the Zinio Reader app for digital magazines. Social is a widget on 3G, Wi-Fi and EDGE/GPRS are available for Internet connectivity on the Venue. It can also be turned into a portable hot spot and can be tethered via USB to your PC for Internet access. For its GPS module, Dell has preloaded CoPilot Live for navigation. Dell Stage that allows you to connect to Twitter and Facebook, but not both simultaneously. The native browser supports Flash 10.1, so Web browsing is a good experience. The Venue’s 8 megapixel autofocus camera is loaded with settings like face tracking, scene modes, white balance, ISO 100 to 800, and panorama. Image quality is quite impressive; colors are well retained and details remain intact at native resolution. The Venue can also capture video up to 720p at 30 fps. Those also managed to come out looking quite good.

The Dell Venue sports a 1400mAh battery that can deliver over five hours oftalk time, which isn’t overly impressive. On a single charge, you can use the handset quite thoroughly for a little over a day and a half. Videos tend to drain the battery a little too quickly though. With a price tag of Rs 28,990 (MOP), the Venue could have been a serious contender in the Android mobile handset space if it weren’t for its ridiculously low volume for media. We’d recommend the Samsung Galaxy S over this. It’s got everything and more than what the Venue can offer at almost the same price.

FOR: Good looking, sturdy design, AMOLED display, decent battery life, good camera, plenty of handy apps preloaded.
AGAINST: Dell Stage UI was a bit sluggish, audio volume for media was very low.
