Aiptek’s entry-level HD (720p) camcorder can shoot 3D photos and videos. It can record stereoscopic videos and merge them accordingly to create a stereoscopic 3D video/photo to be viewed on the
camcorder’s parallax barrier display screen, eliminating the need for 3D glasses. The camcorder has a mini HDMI interface, which can be connected to a 3D-compatible HDTV or monitor to view the 3D content using 3D glasses.

Simple anaglyph 3D glasses are also bundled to let you view the videos in 3D on a regular non-3D display. The built-in 24 MB memory can record just 40 seconds of video, but you can install up to 32 GB of SDHC memory. A locked built-in ROM of 71 MB carries the ArcSoft TotalMedia HDcam software for viewing/converting videos and photos into 3D anaglyph videos. It is compatible with Nvidia’s 3D Vision kits too. The camcorder is slightly bulkier than a regular mobile phone, sports a built-in retractable USB port for data transfer and to charge the 1000 mAh battery, which lasts barely over an hour. The rear features two microphones and two 5 megapixel sensors for stereo audio/video recording. An HDMI interface completes the camera for viewing the videos directly on a 3D capable display.

Videos are captured at 29 fps and 720p, but the camcorder lacks optical zoom and the captured videos were quite jerky. When panning the camera, we found a signifi cant drop in video quality is the capture speed is pretty slow while panning. The overall build-quality is good with a sturdy dual-tone and glossy shell. The control panel consists of the record, delete, photo capture and 2D/3D toggle buttons which are well placed around a 5-way joystick. The UI is very simple , but there are no settings for the camera modes such as EV, ISO, shutter speed, etc. Overall, this pocketsized device is quite steeply priced for an entry-level 3D HD camcorder.It costs around 19k

KRESTEL GX - Photo Management Software

Kestrel GX's user interface resembles that of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, with the viewing area in the
center, thumbnail strip at the base, and a panel on the right. On selecting a folder, the thumbnails are displayed
at the base. Below the viewing area are buttons for image rotation, slideshow, edit, full screen view, actual size and delete.

 The right panel has three tabs - Search, Keywords and Metadata. As the first step of the workflow, you have to keyword your photos using ratings, tags and categories. Once done, you can search for what you want from hundreds of photos in a jiffy . Advanced Search allows you to search based on fi le type, image resolution, exposure parameters, etc. 

The built-in photo editor is straightforward. To the left, you have 10 parameters, which include Level, Crop, Resize, Crop, Red eye and Watermark. When you click any of these, a dialog box displays the original image and preview with sliders for adjusting the values. 

You have to remember to save the images before you exit the editor, because it doesn’t remember the parameters you adjusted. The application is very easy to use and a good starting point for beginners. However, you’ll find it frustrating to use on a basic PC or laptop because it’s heavy on resources.

There are five Ethernet ports; one for Internet access and the rest to support clients on a LAN, but the lack of a Gigabit port and USB is a downer. The E1000 comes with the Easy Connect software, which makes setting up your internet connection a cakewalk. The software does everything for you, so you can sit back and enjoy a cup of coff ee while the router does its work. The E1000 uses WPA/WPA2 and WEP encryption and both come with 64 and 128 bit versions.

It also offers a guest network, where guests can log in with a password, but will not be able to access the printer or view the contents of the host’s computer. The E1000 performs quite well at a distances of 5 to 12 feet from the router, with the signal dropping as you move further away. The signal dropped drastically about 20 feet away from the router. The overall performance is decent for a basic router, but we would have liked better range. It also performs poorly when multiple computers are connected, as throughput drops as the number of connected PCs goes up.

Webcams are built into pretty much every laptop today, so one would have to be pretty special to get people to spend extra money. The Lifecam HD-5000 does drastically improve the experience for anyone who’s been frustrated by the poor quality of video chats.

The camera’s base twists like a fi nger to curl around an LCD monitor frame, but the bulky body sticks out about an inch, and there’s no physical zoom control. Setup is a breeze even without the bundled software, but don’t expect this cam to work on a Mac. During tests with a high-speed connection, both Skype and Google chat partners  were pleasantly surprised by the clarityof the video, but slight movements caused the autofocus to constantly recalibrate. Users can encode 720p 16:9 video in real time, which video bloggers and podcast makers will love.

Clean system restore points and create space

If your system is running stably and if it has been a while since you last installed any new software, you can delete all system restoration points except the most recent one. 

DELETE OLD POINTS: For that, right click the item for your system drive in the ‘Desktop’ or ‘Explorer’ folder and select the context command ‘Properties’. Then right click the button ‘Clean’ to the right below the pie chart for the occupied and free space. The ‘Disk cleanup’ dialog will then appear with a progress bar and the message about the free space potentially available being calculated. This may take a few minutes’. The system dialog ‘Disk Cleanup’ then opens. In that, activate the tab ‘Other options’. If you click the ‘Clean’ button in the bottom most field ‘System restore points’, you will be asked one last security question. Answer this question with ‘Yes’ to delete all old data for the system restoration.

AVOID WASTING SPACE: You can also deactivate the system restore function
completely. However, we advise you against it. It would be better to limit the
storage space to a reasonable value. For that, open the item ‘System and Security’ in the Control Panel by double clicking it and activate the tab ‘System restore’. In that, you can ‘Deactivate system restore for all drives’ using the option with the same name. Or select
an item for ‘Available drives’ and click the ‘Settings’ button near it. In the
next dialog, you can either ‘Deactivate system restore on this drive’ or restrict
the use of the hard disk with the ‘Amount of memory to be used’ slider.

SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-H55

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H55 is a compact super zoom camera with an impressive set of features that is headlined by its ample 10x optical zoom. It features a brush metal finish and it’s small enough to be easily carried around. Buttons are well spaced out, allowing you to navigate between menus with ease. The addition of a jog dial makes it much easier to switch between the various modes. It comes with a wide 3-inch LCD display that performs well in daylight.

The camera features a 14.1-megapixel sensor and a 25 mm wide angle lens, allowing you to capture a wider frame into your shot. It boasts over 10 scene modes, and also allows the user to experiment with manual and program modes. A nifty little feature is the sweep panorama mode. It works flawlessly and allows you to create images as wide as 7152 x 1080 (horizontal) or 4912 x 1920 (vertical). If you are not too keen on fiddling with manual settings, the iAuto mode automatically selects the most suitable mode, and does so quite flawlessly. The H55 is quite a stunner when it comes to capturing videos. Besides 640 x 480, it can also record at 720p (1280 x 720, 30 fps). Overall color and contrast are handled well, but colors that have a tinge of red tend to be slightly blown out of proportion.

Image stabilization is also very good, allowing you to achieve a very steady video even at full zoom. In still images, it does a very good job at color reproduction. Here, the reds are well within limits, and the overall picture quality is sharp with no apparent fringing or color bleeding.
Macro shots are a disappointment as the H55’s minimum focus distance is 5 cm. All in all, this is a good camera with a competitive price tag of Rs 14,990.

CANON POWERSHOT G12

The Canon PowerShot G-series cameras are a perfect blend of features for enthusiasts. Some of the notable features are complete manual control over exposure parameters, RAW format support and rock solid build. The PowerShot G12 isn’t significantly different from the G11, but offers a few additional useful features.

 It boasts a 10 megapixel sensor and the 5x zoom lens has a focal length of 28 mm at the widest end, which is common in digital cameras these days. What sets the G-series apart is the instant access to EV, ISO settings and shooting modes in the form of dials on the top panel. There’s also a provision of hot shot for adding an external fl ash. The swivel screen, which can be pulled out and rotated 180 degrees outward and 90 degrees inward, allows capturing photos in crowded areas with the camera held over the head or from ground level. An additional dial in front is a new feature. It comes in handy for adjusting shutter speed. 

The aperture can be adjusted using the dial on the control panel next to the 2.8-inch LCD. The G12 also features 720p video recording and a few additional scene modes. It doesn’t support optical zoom while recording videos, but there’s digital zoom. Performance is outstanding; 1/3 step increment for ISO, 1 cm range for macro shots and swivel display help to take great shots.

 Even at ISO 800, the noise level is acceptable. We took plenty of outdoor and indoor shots using various ISO settings, scene modes, with and without fl ash, and macro mode. The reproduction of colors and details was excellent, but high-contrast photos shot in daylight suffered slightly from fringing. The fi nal results looked great after processing the RAW files in Lightroom.

Simplify the use of the login dialog in Windows (7,Vista,XP)

A new mouse is acting strange on the PC: the pointer can hardly be tamed, and even with the slightest touch, it is moving too fast. The speed can be adjusted by changing the settings, but remains unchanged in the login dialog for all system users.


Adjust the mouse and make sure the settings apply to the computer’s
default user. With that, these settings will be available to all users even in the login
dialog. Open ‘Run’ in the start menu of Windows XP, enter ‘regedit’ and click
‘OK’. From Vista onwards, enter ‘regedit’ in the input field of the start menu
and press the [Enter] key. Confirm the question of user account control with
‘Yes’ or ‘Continue’. Then navigate to the key ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\
Mouse’ and Double-click on "Default" and change it's value to from '0' to '1'.

 If you want to change only one setting or swap the mouse keys for left-handers, you can also edit the string ‘SwapMouseButtons’ by double clicking in the key ‘HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Mouse' and setting the value to ‘1’. Then close the registry. From the next boot, the previously defined mouse configuration will be effective throughout the system.

Nokia has announced that it will launch its own Windows Phone 7 devices soon at low prices. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said that “we have become convinced that we can do that very quickly”. So now we can expect some cheap WP7 devices soon.

Mobile World Congress 2011 this past week proved something of a flop for Windows Phone, with new Android devices dominating the line-ups of most manufacturers. Nokia itself has said that its first smartphones running the platform aren’t expected until later in the year. One of the current issues is pricing, with Microsoft’s stringent minimum specifications and inflexibility on modifications leading to an expensive range of functionally very similar handsets. Broader support for chipsets other than Qualcomm’s will be one important step in that process; earlier this week, ST-Ericsson confirmed it was focusing strongly on the Windows Phone platform.

SPICE M-67 3D

Spice’s latest off ering is the world’s first glassless 3D phone, the M-67 3D. It has a lightweight streamlined look, but the black and gold combo is a little loud. The keypad layout, while neat, is too fl at, making typing a bit uncomfortable. It has a proprietary USB/charging port and 2.5mm handsfree socket, which is annoying. The M-67 is equipped with a 2.36-inch LCD panel with a 240x320 resolution. 

It uses an auto-stereoscopic 3D display, so it doesn’t require glasses to view images or video in 3D. The 3D UI is a bit gimmicky and doesn’t convert all screens to 3D. At the end of the day, it’s still the same Java platform. Navigating the menus is speedy and there’s no lag while typing. Call volume was a little too low for our liking. Audio quality was not bad, but the higher frequencies were a little sharp. This can be adjusted using the 8-band customizable EQ. The FM radio worked well, with clear reception when traveling.

The video player allows you select 2D or 3D content, but watching these videos can be quite a strain on your eyes. We faced formatting issues while trying to convert and play 3D videos from YouTube, and even though the bundled videos played fi ne, the framerates were wonky. 3D images look good, but the videos are almost certain to give you a headache. The M-67 3D is GPRS-enabled handset. The Spice FunSpace Section offers quick links to Facebook, Vuclip, and Wapdia, and Nimbuzz for chat. Bluetooth with A2DP and USB connectivity are also available. The mobile tracker and remote wipe options are useful in case of theft, and there’s also a blacklist function for calls and messages. The 2 megapixel camera is as basic as it gets, and image quality is just plain bad. The battery off ers two days of usage with a good amount of talk time. The idea of glassless 3D on a phone this cheap was astounding, but the overall experience is less than impressive.

Though we noticed efficient cooling for the test laptop, the two adjustable foam pads that keep the laptop from slipping, rise quite high, making operation a bit awkward. You can eliminate the pads completely, but without it you can use the cooler only at the lowest possible angle.
